Richie Z’s Brickhouse BBQ & Grill ~ Pierre, South Dakota

Well, we may have found it. We may have recently found the best BBQ in South Dakota, at least so far!

Richie Z’s is located in an unsuspecting area of town in a building who’s outside is nothing to right home about. Even the entry leads you to question if you really should be trusting the place as you enter down a dark stairwell into the building’s basement. BUUUT, once you get down the stairs, you realize you’ve found a gem of a restaurant. Everything was newly furnished with themed western decor.

We were seated at a table rather quickly and though we were in a bit of a rush for lunch, needed a few minutes to browse the menu as they had so many mouthwatering options!

After much deliberation, Andrew decided to give the Smokey Mountain Brisket Mac and Cheese a go. His verdict was that it was tasty, but that he would have preferred even more brisket to really get the feel of dining at a BBQ place.

I settled for a pretty standard meal at a BBQ joint and went for the Brisket Sandwich which came with one side. My brisket was so tender and flavorful! Andrew tried a bite and said he would definitely go with that the next time! The fries were also perfectly cooked and so tasty. I cleared my plate completely.

Richie Z’s has bottles of their own BBQ sauce on the table. I always liberally layer sauce onto my sandwiches.

We definitely found a gem in Richie Z’s off the beaten path in South Dakota. It may look like a hole-in-the-wall when you approach it, but it is well worth a stop. If you do plan to stop by, be sure to know that they are closed on Mondays and I believe they closed in between lunch and dinner as well for a short bit (although I can’t find the proof online to verify that fact.) Perhaps call ahead before visiting to verify that information, but definitely put this on your Top 10 places to eat in South Dakota list! We will most certainly return!
