Following a crazy week of VBS at church, I spent a few days visiting my friend Carrie who lives in Eagle Grove in Northwest Iowa. Despite living in Iowa her whole life, she had never visited the Blue Bunny Parlor in Le Mars, so I told her I would gladly go back with her on a day trip from her house. I also was looking forward to finding a few more ice cream statues. More on that in another post.
Le Mars is about a 3 hour drive from Eagle Grove. Before we did any ice cream sculpture hunting or ice cream eating we knew we should grab lunch somewhere. We had seen that Bob’s Drive In had good reviews on Trip Advisor and was listed as Cheap Eats so we figured it would be a good place to try. I’d also been planning to try a “loose meat” sandwich well in Iowa (these also can be known as Taverns or Made Rites.) The Made Rite restaurant chain began in Iowa so getting a sandwich like that seemed like the right Iowa thing to do.
Bob’s Drive In is a decent sized joint. They have indoor and outdoor seating. When you order you go up to the window and then they will bring food to your table.
This place seemed quite popular with the locals. They serve a lot of diner type fair. The decor was also mainly diner related. As you can see it isn’t really a drive-in, but I wonder if back in the day it used to be.
As you can see, I did order the Tavern. It was OK but not the best thing I’ve ever eaten. I think it could have been improved if I’d asked for some cheese to go on top of it.
The fries were very delicious and overall it was good value for a meal. Follow sitesandbitesjournal on Instagram to see our travels in real time or follow this blog and have e-mail updates sent your way for the full details.
